Housesitter Wanted

10/23/25

Sometimes housesits are really a dream. The home is lovely comfortable, and clean. The animals are sweet attentive well behaved. In my housesit group I’m known as the one who will take care of just about any animal. A homeowner who had a raccoon was seeking a sitter and all my girlfriends passed. I said I’d do it because raccoons are inquisitive, intelligent animals. Ever since then, they send me the weird ones. I’d care for any animal except amphibians. Snakes, rodents, lizards—no problem. I saw a Housesit for inside pigs, but I decided to pass. I also saw one for nine elderly dogs and diapers. I’m crazy but not that far gone yet, although I’m hoping to hear back from the housesit with eight alpacas.

When accepting a housesit, I always trust my intuition. If the person and I hit it off, I accept and I’ve had nothing but great experiences. However, I learned my lesson from a WorkAway position that I did last year. Now I ALWAYS ask for a video tour of the home so that there aren’t any surprises. As that hostess drove me from the train station, she said that she had “a bit of a hoarding problem”. I’ve done home organization for folks who are over-run with stuff, so I’m empathetic about the shame that accompanies hoarding. However, I’ll be honest. If I would have had to sleep in that house, I would have left that same day. It was moldy (BLACK mold), damp, filthy, cold. The lady bought discounted food, which I’m down for as it decreases food waste. However, I don’t buy meat which is expiring that day and plan to eat it four days hence. She told me “it’ll be ok. Just marinate it.” The only reasons that I stayed was because 1) I slept in a camper in the backyard that was relatively clean 2) and I was there to help her daughter who had two year old twins. Daughter lived in an immaculate home up the block, she was exhausted and she trusted me around her boys and 3) I could walk to town to eat fresh food.

I love housesitting. It’s the greatest way I’ve found to travel and I’ll keep doing this as long as I can…and as long as two way video feeds work!
